this is the news...

My current work contract expires in a week's time. Truth be told, I'm kinda relieved. While I like the people here and enjoyed the work, I'm starting to feel a yearning for the open road again.

Truthfully told, while I'm an okay programmer, it's not anything in which I have passion. In case you hadn't noticed. *wry smile*

Anyway, I have my next contract lined up and all I have to do is sign. Three months as an ABAP programmer down in Nowra. Nowra's about an hour south of Wollongong, where I was working from March-July 2005, a coastal town and nice. About two-and-a-half hours from Sydney, although [livejournal.com profile] saramund reckons it's three hours by train, so I'll probably end up driving down the first time and catching the train back and forth when I come up to Sydney.

And, since I have the money lined up, it looks like the Round The World trip is back on the cards again. It was in question a little while ago, but we're back on the wagon now! I'll be booking it this weekend - hopefully the places and spaces I want to go to will still be possible according to the timing of the overall trip and the tours and everything. *crosses fingers*

[livejournal.com profile] venom69? Are you still gonna be in the UK/Europe come November?

If I can fly in to the US in the first week of October (rather than the second, when Disneyland is happening) then I will do my utmost to hop around seeing people. At this stage Texas is a definitely possibility. And if I'm in the north-east US, other than [livejournal.com profile] slm76, anyone interested in meeting up?

I love fixing problems. I just can't do it for too long without needing a break.

If I could program in six week block with a couple of weeks break between each six week set, that would be the best of all worlds for me, I think. I'd know there was a break coming and I'd work the better for it.

Hm. Well, I go to school in Gettysburg, PA. I have no idea, yet, what my schedule would be like.

If you do swing by this way and spend a night or two in Gettysburg, if you're visiting a student here you can rent a room or two from the Seminary for a lot less than you'd pay for a hotel room.

Gettysburg as in the Gettysburg Address?

Yes. Also as in the Battle of Gettysburg which was the reason for the Gettysburg Address. I wouldn't call it the single most important battle of the American Civil War, though others have, but it is certainly the most well-remembered by far. The battlefield is a national park, and it has more monuments than any other national park. The seminary is basically on the battlefield; they used one of our buildings for a lookout tower, and Lee's headquarters were just down the road from us. Gettysburg is a small town in south-central Pennsylvania that gets a huge influx of tourism in the spring, summer, and fall. (I've heard it described as "Disneyland for history buffs.")

I'm not a history buff, but background and culture - the things that make people who they are - intrigue me.

I'm hoping to go around 'New England' and possibly with a little time in PA. The only 'northeast' I've been to has been Albany, NY. I had some friends up there - should get in contact with them again.

But Gettysburg sure sounds interesting!

Glad that you've got your next contract all lined up! And hey, I'm in Texas, too. *g*
