maintenance
Jan. 14th, 2009 09:16 amLast night, I was putting a peel mask on my face while B1 tried to learn about BitTorrent. She got lured into Ugly Betty and wants to watch Season 2, which we are presently downloading...oh crap. I paused it this morning to use the internet since Torrents slows down our internet connection liek whoa and I wanted to check my Gmail... BUGGER. And she's probably gone to work now, so no point in calling her... ACK.
Anyway, I was putting on a facemask last night and thinking that I was fairly high-maintenance, compared with B1 who cares not for beauty treatments, make-up or anything of that ilk. B2 does make-up for her teaching work and ballet, but other than that...nothing. I'll do for my skin, but am not so hot about make-up, even though I have quite a lot of it. It just never seems to get used. (I forget most of the time.)
This morning, I went to the gym before work, and was drying my hair in front of the mirror - pretty much just enough hot air to give the roots and scalp a sporting chance at drying before midday. There was no styling involved, no curling or straightening, no fluffing or fussing. Just a quick blow-dry. Meanwhile, in the mirror, other women were painstakingly doing their make-up. Compared to them, I'm really very low-maintenance.
This morning, on the radio, the female radio presenter was talking to her male counterpart about eyebrow waxing, and the guy said something to the effect of, "Why do you do that to yourself?" And she said, "It's really a necessity. Would you want me to come in with hairy eyebrows?"
Sometimes I wonder if there isn't an inherent irony in the fact that a man might ask "why does a woman do this to herself" but he'd never date a woman who didn't.

Haul from the garden this season:
12 potatoes from 5 potato plants. (I didn't take very good care of them.)
About 30 carrots.
Asparagus (from seed) is growing nicely, but it'll be another year before I can harvest anything from them. And I think it may need a bigger pot...
Cherry tomatoes - still growing.
Lemons (saramund? That lemon tree of yours = good. Nothing off the mandarin just yet.)
My mother, on the other hand, has potatoes, watermelon, capsicum, eggplant, chilli peppers, cucumber, pumpkin (squash), tomatoes, lemons, parsley, mint, onions, vietnamese mint, basil, chives, rosemary, coriander, and rocket growing in her garden. Of course, she also does a lot more gardening and takes better care of her plants.
