Democracy Roll

"They saw them rolling, but nobody was hating..."

The idea of the architect was that you could walk up the hill and be on top of our representatives in government, and be able to show that this is democracy.

More than ever, right now, we need the reminder that our MPs represent us - that doesn't just mean executing our will for the country, but also that they are the example of us that the world sees.

US Political Action Alert: Refugee Crisis and Prison Sentencing Reform over at [personal profile] beatrice_otter's LJ.

What Religion Would Jesus Belong To?
"Founders are typically bold and charismatic visionaries who inspire with their moral imagination, while their teachings sometimes evolve into ingrown, risk-averse bureaucracies obsessed with money and power. That tension is especially pronounced with Christianity, because Jesus was a radical who challenged the establishment, while Christianity has been so successful that in much of the world it is the establishment."

Anne Frank Today Is A Syrian Girl
"The obstacle was an American wariness toward refugees that outweighed sympathy.

Jim Wright: How The War Against Terror Was Won
"Yes we did. Many times over. We killed them. We killed them all. We killed their families. We killed their wives and their kids and all their neighbors. We killed whole nations that weren’t even involved just to make goddamned sure. We bombed their cities into rubble. We burned down their countries."

On the difference between being nice and being kind
Haven't read this, was pointed to it by [personal profile] colls, but need to take a look. Looks valid and interesting.

In other news, I went to a women's weekend at our church, based on the book of Hebrews, about how to be encouraging. It was really good. And all the more to sit in a group of women, with whom I figured I had little in common but our faith, and discover that we have a lot of other things in common: feminism, belief that the church is focusing too much on 'gay marriage' and not enough on compassion for refugees, how to minister to our fellow women when we're all out of emotional spoons ourselves, and many other things, including taking time to self-minister spiritually (something that I struggle with, and I'm a single woman with no partner or children to take my time and energy).

It took up a big chunk of my Saturday, but it was really good and I was going to type up a precis of it, but haven't done it yet. I don't think I stopped on Saturday until around 10:30pm. And then Sunday was nearly as busy!

Tonight, I'm going to dinner with a friend, and another friend (undergoing a messy divorce) wants me to go out with him and others to a comedy club until nearly midnight. Sorry, mate, no.

Finally, I'm over at imzy as tielan.

Wedding Wednesday: You Will Catch This Bouquet

Wow. OP is a single woman who's facing 'wedding season' and wants to avoid being pressured into the bouquet toss. She's asking for advice on how to do it, since the last wedding she was at, the bride stopped the party to pressure her into joining the bouquet toss.

Stopped the party.

STOPPED THE PARTY.

What. The. Everloving. FUCK.

And a whole bunch of the comments are "but it's tradition!" and "I can't believe you'd make a fuss over what's a silly little thing and spoil the bride's day". (To be fair, a lot of the comments are "whoa, hells to the no, bride was outta line", but still...)

I posted the suggestion that she not only say "No, thank you," but also point out that her pleasure in the day will be materially spoiled by being forced to do something she doesn't want to do. That's probably the best one can hope for - some people will simply keep pushing because "it's tradition", although I personally think it's because they're control freaks who can't stand the idea that not everyone wants to do the traditional thing.

Jezebel: Mom Puts 7-Year-Old on a Diet in the Worst Vogue Article Ever

One word: ACK.

Note 1. I haven't read the original article.

Note 2. This might be another case of the 'Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother' where the woman recognised the failings in her decision on how to bring the child up. (But I kind of doubt it.)

The interview went pretty well - it was mostly a personality interview to see how I presented, whether I'd fit in with the culture, etc. And to tell me about the two projects they're looking at using me for.

Project 1: 10 mins drive away, starts after Easter and runs to October, very good money, at least one project member I've worked with before.

Project 2: 30 mins train away, starts after Easter and runs to December (with probable extension), good money, but the area isn't something I'm quite as skilled in.

I think I'd prefer Project 1 - just because the team is larger, it sounds like something I can do, but it also sounds like something I can learn from.

From the interview it very much sounded like they'd sign me up on the spot if I passed the technical. So I just have to make sure I pass the technical. Lots of technical revision coming up this week - all those things I used to know but have since forgotten!

Am making a Halloween costume for a party being thrown by an American friend in Sydney (married an Aussie).

Picked out a 'Victorian Steampunk' dress - Simplicity 2172.

I started with a 'calico' or a test attempt in plain calico - which was a good thing, since I picked the wrong sizing. Apparently US size 12 is not the same as AU size 12.

Got that fixed, and now I'm having a difference of opinion about the sleeves:

opinion? )

And while we're at costumes, a very cool link to an Offbeat Bride Wedding!

Team Awesome Wedding: San Diego Superhero Wedding

I'm not married, nor likely to be, but this would be SO MUCH FUN. And anyone I invite would totes have to come in fancy dress. Or possibly wear a mask (for my more staid sections of family).

14 cows as a "handkerchief to wipe away tears" of 9/11.
As America looked inward in the days, weeks and months after September 11, 2001, others around the world made extraordinary gestures toward the United States.
We were all so focused on ourselves – understandably so – that many probably missed the fact that Iran's President Mohammad Khatami condemned the attacks, that Ireland and Israel held full national days of mourning, that the Afghan Taliban told "American children [that] Afghanistan feels your pain".

You are even less likely to have heard what could be one of the most touching reactions of all. This is the story of how a destitute Kenyan boy turned Stanford student rallied his Masai tribe to offer its most precious gift to America in its time of need.

I'd never heard of it, certainly.

This is an awesome engagement photoshoot. I'm just sayin'...

They're just so damn cute!

Also: Colour photos of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake found at Smithsonian: likely the first colour images of San Francisco ever taken!

--

Also: stepbro is engaged to be married. Engagement party to be the Easter weekend. He'll be receiving a quilt from me for the wedding - must ask him and his fiancee about colours.

Am contemplating a prettified sheet set for the engagement, though. Contemplating. Not sure there's time to do it, though...

15 Things Worth Knowing About Coffee: exactly what it says on the packet.

Schadenfreude pie recipe: it would probably kill you from the sweet. But I really want to try to make this sometime. (Would have to find Australian versions of things like the molasses.)

Disney Princess mash-up

Black bean beef roast. Made it last night for dinner. Have leftovers for at least another two meals - three if I don't eat too much. Come over someday and I shall make it for you and your tastebuds shall REJOICE like great rejoicing things. I promise!

I want honey snaps. Arnotts biscuit company stopped making them in the mid-90s and I've never yet tried to make them instead. Hoooooney Snaaaaaps.

It has rained like crazy here these last few days. I'm a bit worried about the driveway gutter at home - it needs clearing out, but there's never time. Or energy. Except now there's rain. "My roof never leaks when it doesn't rain," anyone?

...someone sit on me before I buy any more fabric. My current weakness is Amy Butler's Soul Blossoms series, which is so bright and happy and beautiful and irresistable, except I really must resist for the sake of the five boxes of fabric I already have!

I have the fabrics picked out for the Supernova quilt-along at Freshly Pieced, too. And I think I've fixed up the Sanctuary quilt issues. Except that I've run out of fabric and had to order more. (See? Five boxes of fabric.) And it will be a very busy quilt, visually.

Sel's Rule #1 of Kaleidoscope quilting: don't use fabrics with busy patterns.

In the meantime, I'm trying to sew as many blocks together so I can arrange them, photograph them, and put them away in prep for the Supernova quilt-along.
