So, my quilt is presently showing at QuiltCon, Pasadena, CA.

It didn't win any prizes, but I was hardly expecting it to. And it's been photographed quite a few times by various people, some of who've tagged me on instagram.

Most notably, it was instagrammed by the company who makes the fabric with which I made the quilt - both the front and the backing - Cotton+Steel.

It's nice to be noticed. :)

And done! Wondering if it needs a border... #310tomendocino #yumaqal #yumaquilt #mendocinomermaids

This was pretty much done over the weekend, from Thursday night to Sunday afternoon. I cut it out on Thursday night and started sewing the pieces on Friday night. Half the quilt was done by Saturday night, and I did the rest on Sunday.

There were layout issues, at one point the cat decided I wasn't paying her enough attention and there was rolling:

*sigh* #cats #310tomendocino #catsofinstagram #advenchuresofsmokeyandmal

Oh, Mal.

Luckily I'd taken a photo before she decided I wasn't paying her enough attention.

The fabric line is Mendocino Mermaids by Heather Ross, and released by the Free Spirit fabric house. It's an old line, no longer in print, although Windham Fabrics is reprinting some of the line in the "Spring 2016" collection, which was on display this weekend at the Houston Quilt Market 2015.

The design is the Yuma Quilt by Gotham Quilts.

I'm still debating whether I want to add borders or not, mostly to make it larger.

Really need to get to bed before midnight. Even if I can't stop my body waking up at 5am, maybe I can persuade my brain not to get in on the act for a couple of hours until the alarm goes off?

Also: either really unfit or getting old. Body hurts after hockey. And this is me without any physical issues! I can't imagine being one of the women dealing with, oh, knees, and ankles, and feet and wrists and things that need binding week after week after week.

I do hope it's unfit. At least I can do something about unfit.

Have 45 minutes to midnight. The race is on...

Oh, and here, have some quilt that I made over the weekend:

Ran out of the top spool. But 2/3 done! (It looks much better when my nose isn't 4" from the fabric...) #aussietulapinkswap

That's the half-finished version, I'll post a pic of the full one up when I'm done, along with an explanation of the process. (Basically: I had an assigment for a quilt exchange, I forgot about it, and had to do a rush job over the weekend.)

Most particularly for:

[livejournal.com profile] sjhw_tolerance, and [livejournal.com profile] allisnow, each of whose hospitality I have trespassed upon multiple times now!

And [livejournal.com profile] amilyn, [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat, [livejournal.com profile] cheekygal, and [livejournal.com profile] andveryginger, each of whom I've stayed with at least once - would you like a quilt? :)

[livejournal.com profile] artaxastra and [livejournal.com profile] penknife, I had a plan for you guys, but I didn't get it done in time this year...

Both quilts were accepted into the Sydney Craft And Quilt Fair!

...both of them got in. I'm kind of flabbergasted...

You're allowed to submit two, but I figured they'd only ask for the second one if they didn't have enough submissions.

So I'm going to have three (yes, I can count) quilts in the show:
  1. The Eternity quilt
  2. Santorini Sun And Sky
  3. The Rainbow Connection

I mean, the Rainbow Connection is not mine, but I had a hand in it, and I quilted it!

*is still kind of shocked and amazed*
seldear: (Default)
Actually, it's just one thumb.

I haven't been posting my quilts here lately - too much effort just to post them over at Mad Quilter's Disease, let alone over here, too.

So we'll start with bodily injury.

bodily injury, nothing major )

And a quilt I made is going in the Sydney Quilt And Craft Show this year! (At least one. I haven't received notification that the second has made it in.)

One of my plans for coming to the US later this year is to take along a bag full of quilts for handing out to ppls I have stayed with while in the US in the past. I've already spoken to Alli. Sue? Bec? Don't know if Hya is still online, let alone reading this. And I'm pretty sure Lola isn't.

Presenting...
THE SCRAP ATTACK QUILT!

Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner!
Alternatively known as "Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner!"

It's the first quilt I've made without a specific colour or fabric scheme - just whatever I had to hand and what I thought was needed.

It's my first real scrap quilt!

A quick life update for those who might be curious.

a brief history of everything )
seldear: (Default)
Life is kinda quiet right now. Still applying for jobs, although it looks like they're going farther afield...again. There's a couple of months' contract in Brisvegas going. Not exactly happy about that. It would wreck church, bible study, writing group, and hockey - which is pretty much the entirety of my social life, such as it is - but if I can hold a job for three months...it's something, anyway. And it would get me back on my feet.

Think of it as working in San Francisco while living in LA.

Ah well, I'd have to get the job first.

Anyway, my first scrap quilt:
angled askew

Made from the leftovers of fabrics I've used in other quilts, it's looking pretty good... Except that I feel like it needs more yellow, bright green, and hot pink. But that could just be me. Thoughts?

2011 Quilting Mosaic
So, 2011 and my sewing efforts.

I had in mind the goal of making 12 quilt tops in 2012, and I succeeded!

quiltspam below )

In addition to the 12 quilt tops, I did costuming, made cushion-covers, and began sewing bags for gifts. The 'Victorian Steampunk dress' is still to be completed - I haven't put the sleeves on the coat just yet because I was looking for cuff lace (and finally found some). I also think I'd kind of like to do some hand-embroidery along the collar and the pocket flaps, but that's for 2012, I think!

Now I just have to find somewhere to wear it!

2012

In 2012, I'd like to:
- make another 12 quilt tops,
- sell at least three,
- make at least one quilt from go to whoa - top, basting, quilting, binding and all!

I still have quilting projects in the works from 2011:
a) Half-Square Harvest
harvest hst quilt: layout 3

b) Charmed Prints
charmed prints

c) Quilt Blogger's Uber-fest
quilt uberfest: blocks 2

And amidst all this, I hope to get a regular job, and actually finish one of my many unfinished original stories!

I may not be getting much sleep in 2012.

The top for the Gothic Summer Sampler is done! Hurrah!

crooked summer sampler

I've decided that I'm going to do a round-up of the posts I'm making about my quilting activities and post them here once a week. When I remember. You can go and look at them or not, as you wish!

On the horns of a dilemma.
I won something!

My quilting endeavours over the last couple of weeks:

Okay, I think that this quilt looks like a possibility for Mum's quilt.

I could knock out one of the 'star' blocks and replace it with a 'panel' block instead. Maybe two? And I have enough white-gold fabrics to make the stars and the sashing so...

This one is mine - all mine!

Finished the next quilt! It's going to friends who got married in December 2009.

Anyway, tomorrow is Writing Day because I will be out all day and Thursday will be Quilting Day, because I will be home all day.

The top is finished!

Kaleidoscope top finished!

Isn't it pretty? So bright and sunshiney and happy! Given that the last week has rained nearly constantly, that sunshiney and happy has been a big mood improver for me.

I'm calling it "Santorini Sea And Sky" because it reminds me of those pics of the Greek islands, all deep blue sky and white plaster-covered houses. I thought about calling it "Oh, I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside", but... *wiggles hand indecisively*

And now I'm going to add borders. Just straight ones, I think - nothing so elaborate as this or this!

Maybe a thin yellow border, then a wider cream one, and then I'll bind the edges in some nice blue fabric. That'll keep the focus on the pattern, but frame it nicely.

Another shot of the top - low angle, taken with my new smartphone camera:
Kaleidoscope top

I'm considering piecing together a back with a few of the leftover pieces from the front. Just one or two blocks and then some fabric scraps?

The deadline for prize entry is the 4th August, which I doubt I'm going to make. But making this quilt was good - a lot less painstaking than my last kaleidoscope, which was certainly pretty, but so very busy and took forever to make!

I might end up giving this one to Agam Darshi, since the points actually, you know, match on this one...

Next project to finish: The Octarine Batik.

Saturday:

Went to North Sydney Produce Markets:
Nth Sydney Markets

I mostly buy meats from the Produce Markets - specialised meats that are hard to find elsewhere, since the local butcher doesn't always carry them.

Sorted my quilting scraps and found a bunch of batik strips left over from when I trimmed my Cathedral Windows several years ago! (I need to make another Cathedral Windows quilt, really.)

Made my first string quilt blocks with the batik strings.
String Blocks - the first

Turned them into a pillow cover:
String Block Cushion Cover

Realised the pillow cover was too small for the pillow, and used more batik strips and black fabric to make a bigger pillow cover:

Sunday

1. Went to Kazbah for their breakfast tagine. Tagine was delicious, but restaurant service was very bad.
2. Bought three winter knits for under $100.
3. Bought supplemental fabrics for quilt along, and batting for the back of my Disappearing Harvest Quilt.
4. Put together my colour scheme for the Kaleidoscope Quilt-Along Take #2.
5. Played hockey. Drew 1-1 when we probably should have won. Discovered that I play better when I'm challenged.
6. Went to church and got an unusual sermon on a non-literal interpretation of 1 Corinthians 14 - the gift of prophecy, and the gift of tongues.
7. Helped out with church dinner.
8. Cooked delicious baked ginger-and-soy marinated chicken on a bed of brussel sprouts lightly cooked in butter, garlic, and white wine. (Highly recommended meal.)

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] wojelah, [livejournal.com profile] arietty, and [livejournal.com profile] audrich for their advice and opinion on the quilt colours from the last post. It was much appreciated!

The colours of the last quilt weren't working for me - as in really not working. So I scrapped the colour scheme I had and picked out a new one:
