I downloaded SGA 2.08 - Conversion and on the whole, enjoyed.

SGA 2.08 - Conversion

The irony of this episode is that my favourite dynamics were just about everything except John/Elizabeth. Cynics will say it's because I don't like John/Liz as a pairing. True enough: I don't like them as a pairing - usually because the interactions between them show Elizabeth in a very negative light.

It's as though all her brains dribble out her ears the instant something happens to Sheppard. Common sense need not apply. Crazy, dangerous man on the loose? Yeah, walk into an enclosed space with him if you don't value your life. Call yourself a negotiator, Liz? Then you should know about human nature, and the human animal - what people become when the veneer is stripped away. And you should be better at talking someone down from the edge than TPTB are showing you to be in Stargate Atlantis.

Please. Even Sam - or Daniel if you prefer Jack/Daniel - had the sense to keep her distance from Jack when he was in a rage. Red Sky and the scene with Jack and the gun, anyone? Not one person in his team tries to drag him away; they appeal to him from the distance of a couple of yards, knowing perfectly well that Jack is on the edge and it will take little to have him lash out at any target.

And if you want to say that Liz behaves that way because "they're in love", then go right ahead. Just don't be surprised when I spit my drink and ask if you have any connection with the world in which we live, or if you're living in the world of Barbara Cartland, and Mills and Boone romance novels.

In spite of the number of lines Liz gets, I persist in the belief that she's getting short-changed on the character front - pretty much the same as Teyla. The boys at Bridge can create kickass female characters, they just can't write for them. And it shows painfully in comparison to the girls of BSG (Roslin, Kara, Boomer, Cally, Duala, hell, even Ellen Tigh has claws and isn't afraid of using them - even if mostly on Saul's back - ye gods those two are scary).

I like Elizabeth and Teyla. I'd like to see them kick some collective ass in their respective roles, and not get upstaged by the boys at every turn. Liz in 'Condemned' facing off against the fat leader guy? Best. Elizabeth. Moment. Evah. And Teyla's moment in 'Trinity' where she kicks Ronan's ass for deceiving her? You go, girl!

Now if the boys at Bridge would only write more of that! A full episode would be nice. Look how far they went with Sam, and think of what they could do with Liz and Teyla! *sighs*

Anyway, rant on Bridge Studios inability to write strong females aside, I like Ronan's interaction with the team and his alpha male posturing with Sheppard (who postures right back). I like the way he and Teyla work as a team together. (Yes, I could ship them, no, I'm not going to - I'm having too much fun with Shep/Teyla, Lorne/Teyla, and Ronan/Liz right now!)

And, of course, the John/Teyla kiss which people are carefully not mentioning. *g*

I enjoyed. What a surprise. No, it wasn't romantic, yes, it was a shock to her and she didn't exactly look like she was enjoying it while it lasted; yes, he apologised at the end and she told him to forget it. As far as I'm concerned, the kiss wasn't necessarily about romance or feelings, it was about the things John is careful not to think about when he fights against Teyla. And it opened a door to possibilities between them - which may just as easily slam shut in denial. And, hey, nobody who knows the guys at Bridge Studios should be surprised, either!

IMO, possibilities are good. Anything more? I'm not holding my breath!

But on the whole, I find it funny that the dynamics that entertained me the most are the ones that nobody else seems to be interested in. Contrary, much?

I suspect that after this week, my downloading of Atlantis will become more sporadic. BSG will continue undaunted, but Atlantis will really have to drag me in with the character interactions to convince me to keep watching.

2 hours to BSG download. *waits*

They need a more women writers in the Stargate universe, generally.

Sam/Amanda Tapping got a good run on SG-1 because she was talented and forward in defining Sam Carter. And because SG-1 is a different style of show to SGA.

Maybe Rachel and Torri need to be encouraged to tell Brad what's what? ;)

And I say more women writers in ALL of scifi.

I confess to be a closet (snerk) ShWeir-er but I *did* like the look on Teyla's face as she walked off... I thought it was a kinda 'phew - got away with that' look. Oh so easy to ship. :)

'Lantis was better than SG-1 this week IMHO... but that's not saying much. :)

I’m a S/W shipper and agree, I ‘ve been worried that Liz’s character is being degraded by any shippiness, although I find I can’t agree that Sam’s character was any less degraded by the whole season 7/8 debacle. This is one of the reasons I think ship should be kept off screen and left to fanfic.
