The house itself is lovely. The owner's nice and usually absent. The other renter is chatty and friendly without being overchatty and overfriendly.

The problem is the dog, the phone, and the mattress.

Two dogs sit out on the covered deck all day. One belongs to the other renter - an itty bitty puppy of a thing that bounces around like a teenaged girl on a red cordial high. But the other dog (also small and fairly bouncy/scampery) doesn't belong to the owner of the house. It belongs to his mum, who's gone overseas on a holiday for about six weeks, leaving the dog in the care of her son - who doesn't really like animals.

It's the middle of winter down here, cold, wet, windy. And the dogs are relegated out to the deck all the time. We brought them in two nights ago when there was a storm warning, but the little dog got to sleep with her owner, while the other dog was put in the laundry.

I heard it whimpering at the door.

Now, I'm not a dog person. I don't dislike them, I just prefer cats. But I hate the sound of an animal feeling miserable. I'm a complete sucker for it.

Last night, we had really strong winds. I dread to think of what the windchill factor was, but I heard the other renter moving around at 6am, and when I got up at 7am, only the other dog was outside. In the wind that I heard howling outside my window. All night.

I spoke with the other renter about it. Apparently the owner completely ignores the dog except to feed it in the mornings. The other renter came back from a two-week trip to Melbourne, and the dog was half-crazy because it had received no attention in that fortnight.

The other renter is due to move out in a week or two.

And it's the middle of winter.

I think that, whenever possible, I'm going to have to sneak the other dog into the laundry in the coming weeks. Because it's too cold and too cruel to leave it outside all night. *shudders*

The owner just uses his mobile - he's never home. The other renter got the phone in her room connected, but seems to have cancelled it as of a few nights ago. So I have limited internet once I get home. Which means the writing has been doing pretty well out of it.

I'm going to reconnect it so I at least have dial-up. Thing is, I don't know how the service provider's going to take it that I'm only there temporarily and don't really have any proof that I'm living there. Bloody bureaucracy!

ETA: Just called up to see what hoops had to be jumped through, it looks like it shouldn't be a big deal. I could probably get it connected by the weekend!

I swear, I'm a bad-mattress-magnet. I must be! This one's lumpy too! Unfortunately, it's a double bed, and I doubt the guy's going to replace it, so I'm going to have to go shopping this evening to hunt down a foam insert to put over the mattress. Or something. Because I'm sleeping for about 6 hours and then waking up and lying awake for a couple of hours in the dark, listening to the wind. Not fun or restful.

At least I don't still have to contend with the jacuzzi.

Oy.

I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree. It's all Sue's fault. And now I have le already-7,500-words-of-SG1-DOOM-plotbunny-with-probably-15,000-more-to-go back in my brain.

*le sigh*

It's a way of getting rid of an old plotbunny anyway.

But I think my [livejournal.com profile] sjficathon is going to be very simple by comparison. (Theoretically.) We'll just squeeeeeeze in 1,000 words and leave it at that. I should probably get that done and out of way while I have the bunny in the head.
