I'm seeing a pattern here.

The bad chicks are always called Selena or some variation thereof.
Always.
Supergirl movie: bad chick - Selena. Gets hold of the glass paperweight thingy and tries to use it to take over Earth.
Batman Returns movie: bad chick - Selena. Well, kinda good/bad/who knows/who cares? But she's not unequivocal good news, let's put it that way.
MIB II: bad chick - Serleena. Trying to get hold of the Light of Zartha.
I feel gypped.
Always.

I thought Serleena in MIB II was just plain evil and wanting-to-take-over-the-world-in-lingerie.

Date: 2005-01-16 01:39 pm (UTC)I've always thought bad girls get named Selina because it's generally thought of as a sexy name, and the good girls? Not usually allowed to be as sexualized as the bad girls in fiction are. Which is kind of nuts, I think, because why can't the good girls be sexy too?

Date: 2005-01-16 07:16 pm (UTC)Didn't know about it. *g* I'm kinda glad I didn't. Any movie title that has a year after it is mildly suspect.
The second one 'Selena' I mentioned was Selena Kyle, a.k.a. 'Catwoman' - not wholly bad, but not unequivocally good.
And somehow, I never thought of my name as sexy.

Date: 2005-01-17 02:31 am (UTC)And I should've caught that you were talking about Selina Kyle! You said "Batman Returns," which really ought to have tipped me off to it. Can I plead the fact that it was really, really early in the morning and I had a five-month old on my lap?
And I've heard that Selina is considered to be one of the sexy names--apparently Tina is too, but I don't see it about my name, so I'm in the same boat there as you. :)

See, I have a cousin called Tina, who I always thought was sexy (not as in sexually attractive, just objectively sexy, if that makes any sense).

Date: 2005-01-16 06:08 pm (UTC)When I was little, for the space of about a year or so, many people thought it was absolutely hysterical to call me "Alison Wonderland."
I think this means that people are just odd.

Date: 2005-01-20 07:10 am (UTC)I was talking with this gal that I am training at work and I was telling her that I couldn't have her work with me on Friday because my favorite show starts up again that night. She asks me what show it is, and I say "Stargate SG-1."
She goes, "Oh yeah! One of my friends loves Stargate, she writes fanfiction and everything!"
"Really?" I say, "That's cool. What's her name?"
She says, "Selena. She's Australian."
"Is she online? Does she have any online names?"
"Well, the screen name that I know her by is SelDear."
I literally almost fell over!
"OMG! I know her too! I met her at Gatecon!"
"Really!! That is so cool!!"
Her name is Amanda Kenyon. :D I just thought you would get a kick out of that!
