Last night, I get home from gym class and open up my laptop to do some writing before dinner. And I get this message.

"Invalid boot.ini file. The file hal.dll is corrupted or missing. Please reinstall this file."

Uh-oh.

My installation disks for the laptop are in Sydney, 150km away (60miles). It's an hour and a half to drive back and pick them up and I've had a long day. I call up my sister who isn't working and ask her to ferry them over. After some confusion over which disks she's supposed to bring, we sort it all out and she promises to drive up the next morning.

Overnight, I think of a few more things she can bring up, and message her with them in the morning.

She leaves home without checking her phone messages. Oh well. They're incidental in the end. She's bringing the disks, and that's the important thing.

Except that she hasn't brought the disks.

...
...
...

She left them on the kitchen table!!!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen! My sister drove for 90 minutes through the horror that is Sydney morning traffic without ever checking or thinking to check that she had brought the very thing I asked her to drive down here!!!!

*HEADDESKS*

I. Am. Pissed. Off.

Especially since I had a lot of writing planned for yesterday and today, to say nothing of losing a day's worth of work, 400km of petrol and 6 hours worth of precious time (her trip down here, my trip up to actually get the disks), and I was going to watch Reckoning 1&2 tonight!

GRRRRRR...

But..

I wouldn't advise rejoicing that I was going to watch 'Reckoning' right now. It looks like the laptop and everything on it is a write-off.

Had no idea it was that bad - not good at all.

*blunt object handed over for the beating of sister*

*hands over big soft buffering thing to shield sister with so no broken bones*

Well, the sister's forgetfulness only delayed the inevitable conclusion: the laptop would have been toast anyway. Her mistake does mean I'll spend at least 3 hours on the road today trying to get everything sorted out. And no writing.

Right now I'm more inclined to take a baseball bat to the rest of the world than her.

If people want to talk to me then I'll talk to them. However I am in no mood whatsoever for inane babble at the present moment.

That's a bummer of an error. Hopefully you managed to resurrect everything.

Strangely, the guy that works for me got that exact message this am on his desktop. Turns out his HDD was well and truly corrupt, and we ended up having to replace it. Nasty. Hope you weren't affected as badly.

Well, I hope the HD won't have to be replaced. But it looks like the OpSys need to be reinstalled.

OK - dude. Understanding the not cool aspect. All fine and good on that factor.

But still .... siblings are a funny species, you have to admit. And exceptionally useful to smack upside the head.

Take care.

That sounds not good, but you should be able to do a Windows repair to fix it without having to reinstall Windows completely. Here is at least one link that might help you fix it. I hope it does. *hugs*

Hon, I couldn't even get into Windows and there were no options to start with a DOS OpSys.

It was excruciatingly frustrating. And yes, I had to reinstall windows.
