'cos she asked for a rant forever and a day ago and I never gave it her.

I like the Harry Potter series. I don't mind the 'shipping. However, I think it's gotten a bit out of hand. Mind you, I think it got way out of hand the first time someone thought: hey, Harry and Draco would be good together! Let's not even go into the Ron/Hermione vs Harry/Hermione debate.

Granted, these are teenagers. They've got hormones rushing through them like shoppers at the end-of-year sales run through department stores, upsetting everything and leaving chaos in their wake. But still, the stories aren't about romance and lurve and snogging. Even if that seems to be all that people can manage to write about them.

I suppose it's just that it seems to have gone so overboard. I wrote the story 'Dawn of a New World' featuring the last battle between Harry and Voldemort and the followers on each side. It was a hard and angry and painful story that featured a moment where Luna Lovegood helps Harry understand why he did everything and how he's supposed to keep going. I labelled it "no pairing".

Of course, someone then said that they thought it was Harry/Luna and I said nothing, but shook my head. It was Harry/Luna in terms of interaction: they talked to each other at the end of the story, but there was no romance, no tenderness, no affection in the common sense of the word. If anything, I suppose it could have been argued that it was Hermione/Ginny since the two girls hugged (and cried) in each other's arms at the end of the battle.

A story I wrote with a definite Harry/Luna bent to it was 'Red String'. That is, without a doubt, a Harry/Luna story. But 'Dawn of a New World'? That was just a story about the aftermath of victory and the despair that comes with success: the question of what comes next and how 'next' is to be achieved.

Shipping in HP has gone way overboard, IMO. The whole 'ship wars? Silly. People will see what they want to see, and who snogs whom is hardly the point of the story. Mostly, I want the trio to remain a Trio to the end. No deaths, and preferably no romances, although I possibly wouldn't be too mad with Ron and Hermione if they got together - just as long as they didn't totally ignore Harry in the process.

I'm so not going to touch on things like Harry/Squid or Weasley!Twincest. *shudder* At least Harry and Draco are both human, if antagonists (personally, I see Draco as a corollary to Ron rather than Harry - Voldemort is Harry's opponent: Ron is the sidekick - as Draco could possibly be seen to be in the case of Voldemort's supporters).

Anyway, I'm kinda looking forward to the next HP book, but dreading the complete and total kerfuffle that is inevitable with its publication.

Bah.

There are some reasonable stories written where they're grown up, but the ones I've read are mostly Ron/Hermione and tend to make Ron rather more romantic than I see him. He's been Mr. Clueless for five years so far, he's not suddenly going to turn into a Lothario of the highest order.
