This post is f-locked against [livejournal.com profile] mebfeather and [livejournal.com profile] iainc. Do not tell them about it!

Why? Because it contains pics of their wedding present!

I'm making a quilt! Machine quilting - not hand. I'm not that much of a masochist! And I decided to work with a fancier pattern than the ones I made for my sisters' 21st birthday.

So far, this is about 15 hours of work. There'll be a wide navy blue border and a thinner lilac/lavendar border, then a navy blue backing and edge.

I've included a close-up of the pattern, and a detail, so you can see the actual prints (fat little japanese children).

It may seem kinda staid to you, but I'm excited! I haven't made a quilt in years - and my last attempts were simple. The piecing together of this one took a lot more effort, energy, and planning - and that was with everything simplified!

*dances with joy*

I won't be doing anything more over the weekend - I don't have the bits and pieces necessary to get it all done. But I'll definitely show you the finished product before it gets wrapped up for Wedding!Con!

Incidentally, if I've been a complete wally and totally made this post visible to Feath and Iain, seriously, guys, don't peek!! It will spoil the surprise!

Lovely, Sel. And maybe one of these days we'll get you into hand-piecing and hand-quilting! :-)

I hand-pieced a whole (huge) quilt. I started it when I was 12. I finished it when I was 19.

It's now in the process of being quilted. It's about 1/3-1/2 done.

I am now 35.

So...yeah.

But your quilt is GORGEOUS. *hugs*

It's a lot easier with a machine! And the seams are straight! (I can't sew a straight seam to save my life!) Although how I'm going to machine quilt the middle sections on my mum's short-arm sewing machine, I don't know.

I'm wondering if there's somewhere I can hire a quilting machine for a day...

It might well work to roll it and just deal with the bulk; I've put some pretty extraordinary things through my short-arm machine and I don't think I know anyone who HAS a quilting machine, even those who do machine quilt.

Will this prize still be with you when you get to me so I may oooh and ahh over your work, or will be it sent via post or dropped off sooner?

Dropped off sooner, I'm afraid. But if I have time, I'd like to put together another one. I think I told [livejournal.com profile] lytarules that I would.

I will have to show you my partially finished one...and the two or three that my mom did for me (all by hand). SO cool.

I love your pattern; I think it turned out beautifully.

That's so awesome! I love the print, and the colors are beautiful. And trust me, machine piecing and quilting is the way to go! :)

My mum thought the print was very pretty, although it's a little bit busy for the pattern. Like I said in the last post, I've learned that this quilting pattern needs a big pattern on the material - and possibly one that isn't quite so busy in colour.

Still, we live and learn.

Sel, let me tell you, a hand-made gift made from the heart is always well appreciated. And well done. One day, I would love to be able to quilt. In the meantime though, I'm sticking with cross-stitch :)

The only two things you need for quilting are: a) a brain, b) time.

It's not difficult - just time-consuming and you have to plan ahead.
