The SJHW VegasCon is finished. Yam and Yam!Mom flew out this morning, super-early. Sue, Denise, Lisa, and myself were driving out of Vegas by 8am. And Sio, Alli, Andrew, and Lola flew out in the morning or early afternoon. At the time I wrote the start of this post, we were heading for Mesquite, AZ to get some petrol, then hoping to make it across Arizona state by tonight.

Distances are deceptive when you're driving in the desert. The long, flat plains combined with the distant haze of the mountains screws up your perceptions of space. And hurtling down the interstate at 130kph (80mph), less than ten metres behind the car in front (who in his own turn is less than ten metres behind the car in front of him, and so on for four cars), is additionally nervewracking. And the heat is definitely on.

Vegas was quite a bit of fun. I would have liked to relax a bit more, but I was expecting the hustle and bustle of where we were going, so it wasn't too bad. I think I'm out of pocket on the gambling front, but it's not as bad as it could have been. I learned interesting things about my own gambling propensities and the nature of gambling odds.

Tonight, we're at the Holiday Inn in Monument Valley, AZ. It's on a Navajo Indian reserve, and we're on our way to Four Corners and somewhere in Colorado beginning with D. That I can't remember. Eh. Anyway, 8 hours driving today; probably just as much driving tomorrow. Sue's asleep after watching 'SGA: The Gift' - or rapidly getting there, Lisa and D are watching 'Sex and the City'. I'm quite close to falling asleep. And it's only getting towards 8pm.

Dinner, however, was really nice. I had Navajo Mutton Stew with frybread. The frybread is absolutely gorgeous with honey.

It's been nearly six weeks since I left Australia for this trip. And while it's been loads of fun, I'm feeling a little homesick again. There's at least two weeks before I get back to Australia. Maybe three. On the whole, the travelling thing is lovely, but I long for familiar faces and familiar places.

Maybe the whole purpose of going away is to make you long for home.

Anyway, I'm enjoying my experiences, but I think I'll also enjoy being home, too.

Wow, you've seen a part of Arizona I never saw. I always wanted to go up to the Navajo Nation, but we just never had the time - or money. Yes, driving across Arizona can be very... boring. Having said that, I suspect the route you went might have gone along some roads I am familiar with. Did you go over the Hoover Dam? Did you go through a town called Kingman? (Kingman is 60 miles away from us) Or did you go north, through part of Utah?

We went through part of Utah. Zion National Park and assorted other towns, the names of which I can't remember. Basically, we went from NV into AZ then into UT, then back into AZ later on in the afternoon.

And tomorrow we'll be going to 'Four Corners' which is apparently where four states meet. Or something like that.

Ah okay. I know the route you're talking about. You maybe went through Cedar City and St George in Utah. Always wanted to go visit there as well *sigh* It's funny how you think you'll have plenty of time for these things...

And yes, Four Corners is where Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico meet. Apparently, it's possible to have a limb in each state at the same time *g*

We're allegedly going to give it a go with the lemmings. (One in each state, not a lemming-limb in each state...)

ps. gorgeous icon. ;)

*fan moment* Mesquite! That was in a CSI episode (the refrigerator truckdriver serial killer one)

As for coming home? Looking forward to seeing you! As, I'm sure, is everyone else!

Enjoy what time you have left, hon - you'll be home again soon enough.

Wow - that drive reminds me of when I was in the US, driving to Vegas. It's a long road... :)

It is a long road. I never realised just how long!

I think I tend to squish the interior of the US into a very small space.

So glad you're having fun!

And I wanted to let you know that I was really glad to have you visit me for those two days. I had lots of fun, and while I spent the next two weeks on LJ whining about various crap happening in my life, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and your visit were most definitely not in the "bad things" category! :)

I took almost the same trip you're taking when I was eleven. We had not intended to go thru the reservation, and were somewhat lost. The restaurant we stopped at sort of appeared, mirage-like. That fry bread with honey is the BEST and I have never tasted anything like it since.
