Been a while.

the long version, in which Sel has a conversation with the muse

"So now we've tidied up the room, we can write now, can't we?" The muse swings her legs off the edge of the desk and glares at the woman packing clothing into a suitcase. "Hey, what are you doing? Where are we going?"

"I have a job in Canberra, remember?"

"But what about the writing?"

Suits, shirts, jewellery and toiletries are packed neatly away. "I can write in Canberra, you know."

"For what? Six hours a day, tops. Assuming they don't work our butts off from 8 til 8 like the last job we took."

"I still got writing done then."

"Not as much."

She tucks towels around the external HD; it holds the episodes of her two favourite shows and she doesn't want it damaged in transit. Two months in Canberra isn't any worse than two months in Perth was a couple of years back. It should be better, in fact. She knows a couple of people in Canberra. Whether they're still talking to her is another matter entirely.

Story of her life.

"You know," the woman says to the muse, "I haven't been doing that much writing in the last fortnight anyway. I was going to do JanNoWriMo, remember? How many words are done on that?"

A mumble is all the answer she gets as she wonders if she should take the latest Pterry book or hunt through her bookshelf for other options. She hasn't read Melanie in a while.

"One thousand words. And it's halfway through the month already."

The muse looks sheepish as she swipes some cat fur off the surface of the desk and watches it float down to the carpet. "We wrote other things, though. Like crackfic."

She gives the muse a warning look for mentioning that. "No more crackfic."

"Aw, just a little bit?"

She's not going to give in to any wheedling. Not this time. "No! I spent the last three months on crackfic and ficathons! I'd like to write something normal. And Sue wants the stories for the Revelations and Taking Flight zines by 1st March."

"Oh, yeah, that." The muse looks glum.

"So Canberra is a good thing," the woman tells her. "Two months during which you get to think about things during the day and I'll write about them at night. Remember Aftermath?"

"Yeah, but you were obsessed when you wrote that."

"Then I will hopefully become obsessed about the original story," she says, "and you provide the ideas. Besides, a couple of months' work will keep the bank balance happy."

The muse hops down off the desk and goes to sit on the edge of the bed and scratches the cat behind the ears. The fluffy little attention whore promptly angles her head for the best petting. "Will there be internet in Canberra?"

"There's almost certainly internet in Canberra."

Musey rolls her eyes. "I mean, will there be internet for us in Canberra?"

"At work, maybe."

"But we probably won't be allowed to surf?"

She shrugs and contemplates shoes for the trip. "Don't know. Won't know until at least a week in. And it's not as though I've been keeping up with the f-list for the last month or so."

"We're not going to read back?"

"Not if I don't have the time for it." She puts the lid of the suitcase down and surveys the room to see what else she might need. "It's hard to muster the energy to talk to people who don't want to be spoken with these days."

"That's why you haven't been playing the RPG?"

"Partly. I'm trying to get things started with a few characters in there, but we'll see if anyone wants to play."

"Wasn't that always the case there?" The muse thoughtfully leaves her hand for the cat to wash. "So...Canberra?"

"Until the middle of March at least."

"The War Memorial?"

"Almost certainly."

"And AB and JB?"

"Yes."

"And writing?"

"Always writing."

the short version

Going to Canberra for work for two months. Accomodation is paid for, plus living allowance, but I don't know how much internet access I'll have.

Haven't been keeping up with the f-list for the last month, if you've posted me something, I probably missed it. If you've received something from me, I'd like a comment to know it got there - and its condition.

Erm. I think that's more or less it. Leave a message at the *beep* if you want anything.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] righnach? Hi! Welcome to my LJ. I don't usually greet people who friend me, but your userinfo has me completely boggled since we share Angel and Stargate fandoms but I don't seem to write what you seem to like (according to your interests) - which is the usual reason that people friend me...so, colour me curious as to how you got here.
