Well, looks like I have this job for another month beyond the initial finishing date - until the end of March. Which could be good, or could be bad, depending on whether or not I can get more work after that.

My calcs suggest that I'll need to be employed for at least six months of this year to afford the RTW trip as I've got it planned out. I can still afford the 'to Disney/Vegas' and 'to China' portions as the work situation stands, I just won't be able to do it on a RTW ticket - especially since this time, the trip is less about staying with people and more about seeing the places I'm going. Which costs money.

Just Disney/Vegas/China isn't bad. It's just not as much as I wanted to do. Then again, my life is full of 'not as much as I wanted to do', so what's new?

Has anyone read 'Labyrinth' by Kate Mosse? I've been trying to find a copy at Borders for the last month and still can't seem to pin one down. My other reading inspiration (as of tonight) is going to be 'Somme Mud' - an account of WWI from an Australian who was in the trenches. I'm hoping to be able to finish an SG1 fic after reading it. (I have a lot of hope - have you noticed?)

And does anyone on my f-list surf? (No, not the internet, for the smartasses on the list.) How do you find it? I'm thinking of learning to surf because it's something I've wanted to learn for a while, and it's both exercise and an exercise in socialising beyond my comfort zone. (ie. academic, geeky, sci-fi kinda people.)

I'm planning for this to be the year that Sel Steps Out And Does Things She Doesn't Usually Do. Entropy and habit are against me, but we shall overcome!

[livejournal.com profile] arabel? That drawing group you mentioned waaaaaay back in October. Are they still doing meetings? And if so, when?

Yes, I really enjoyed it (a lot more than a few similar books I read at the time!) Hope you find a copy!

Cool. I heard good things about it and thought it sounded like my kind of book.

Thanks for the rec!

you've still got lots of time before you head out - so don't get too disheartened, you may find another contract after this one that takes you right up to the trip!

and nope, don't surf. wouldn't even know where to start.

Well, yes. But contracts tend to be for periods in multiples of 3. And if I finish in March (assuming they manage to get someone in) and want to leave by the start of October...that's squeezing things awfully tight.

But I might get a contract - who knows? Definitely hoping. (Good for the bank balance as well as the holiday!)

Heh. Not many oceans out your way, really...

Apparently there are surf clubs that give lessons for beginners - mostly Bondi Beach (which is a bit of a bummer - further than I like) - individual lessons and group ones, as I understand it.

Sydney = easier to surf than dive.

I've tried diving. It was fun. I'll do it again if I have the chance (ie. when I get down to Tassie). But surfing is something that I'd like to try as well! :)

Surfing? Just make sure you have a strong core. :D

...I imagine that'll make more sense once I start learning to surf?

The bit round your middle.

The ability to hold your tummy in and your back straight.

Lower abdominals. :)

Ahhh. That.

Hmm...not sure about lower abdominals. They're okay, just not really really strong or anything...

Sel Steps Out And Does Things She Doesn't Usually Do

Sounds like a good year. :D

And re: contracting, it's funny when that happens, isn't it... is it worth looking around for other stuff and leaving them early if you get something? Not always a good plan but sometimes workable.

I'd feel bad about leaving them in the lurch.

Still, as several people in the industry have noted, it's a pretty good time right now for work. I might have a look around for something that starts at the end of March and goes through to October. Whether I take it is another matter, but at least I'll know about it.
