Due to a budgetary blowout in my present contract, it looks as though I won't be returning to this job when I get back after all!

Not entirely a surprise. My supervisor mentioned it towards the end of last week, including the probability that they mightn't have work for me after all.

If they don't, then it's back to pounding the streets looking for a job.

This puts next year's travels (RTW) on the line - although I'm not backing out of anything just yet. We'll see what presents itself in the coming months - who knows?

I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] saramund on the weekend about the job situation. I'm thinking of taking a waitperson position over the Christmas/New Year period - mostly because I've never done face-to-face service before and I think it would be valuable personal experience dealing with people who aren't inclined to treat you nicely.

Oh, wait. I think I just described fandom shipping wars, as well as the attitudes of Denialites and Doritos to a fan such as me!

But seriously, I've never had to work in face-to-face service before. I didn't need a job while I was at school, and I got into computer programming straight out of school. So this would be an...educational experience. Possibly. :)

I don't know where you'd start to learn to wait tables at thirty years of age, though!

As long as you can carry stuff and write down orders I'm sure you'll do fine :P

LOL. It seems simple, but I'm suddenly imagining it a lot more complex than it seems...

See, that's the other thing. Interaction with real people (instead of these fake people on the intarwebs) and having to work at being human instead of a programmer. :)

Denialites? Doritos?

I've never worked in hospitality before, but I worked in sales for years while at school and at uni. While I couldn't go back to it full time, sometimes I do miss it.

You could try this course, I guess.

Denialites? Doritos?

Same breed, different fandoms.

I dunno if it warrants a course, per se. I mean, I'm not about to go into hospitality or retail. I'm just looking at a job over Christmas/New Year with an eye to developing skills that I haven't yet had to develop in my line of work.

But thanks for the link! *begins checking out courses*

Well, I didn't think it was going to be all wine and roses. But I think that it's something I should try for a while. Retail or waiting tables.

Learn how the other half lives, etc, etc, etc. I've only ever run bloodless jobs dealing with computers, phone switches, and suchlike. I think I'm better suited to that than anything else, sure, but it won't hurt to try my hand at something else for a while...

Well, there are other service positions besides waiting tables. Anything in the line of hospitality or retail. And you sure won't make any money, unless you can get a job at a swanky restaurant that has good tippers. I could see you doing concierge type service more than I can see you waiting tables.

I just figured waiting tables was something easy to get into from a background of no experience but willing to learn.

And it's the time of year, too - although that could be just as much retail as anything else.

Well I'd recommend retail over waiting especially that time of year. Customers for retail are usually happy and willing to spend money in the couple months before Christmas. If you're still there after the holidays (when they come returning) then it may be a different story but you can usually point them to a manger to deal with it.
In waiting the customer is uber picky about everything and takes it out on you.

I'd go with retail, someplace you love to shop so you get a good discount! ;)

speaking from personal experience, retail is pure hell during the holidays. the place is always packed, and a disaster, the hours suck, and inevitbly require you to miss parties and other seasonal goodness, the wages are minimum, and while people are generally out to spend, they want to spend as little as possible, and they're not always out to be nice. srsly. there's nothing that can turn a person into a scrooge faster than working retail over the holidays.
