job d'oh

Due to a budgetary blowout in my present contract, it looks as though I won't be returning to this job when I get back after all!

Not entirely a surprise. My supervisor mentioned it towards the end of last week, including the probability that they mightn't have work for me after all.

If they don't, then it's back to pounding the streets looking for a job.

This puts next year's travels (RTW) on the line - although I'm not backing out of anything just yet. We'll see what presents itself in the coming months - who knows?

I was talking with saramund on the weekend about the job situation. I'm thinking of taking a waitperson position over the Christmas/New Year period - mostly because I've never done face-to-face service before and I think it would be valuable personal experience dealing with people who aren't inclined to treat you nicely.

Oh, wait. I think I just described fandom shipping wars, as well as the attitudes of Denialites and Doritos to a fan such as me!

But seriously, I've never had to work in face-to-face service before. I didn't need a job while I was at school, and I got into computer programming straight out of school. So this would be an...educational experience. Possibly. :)

I don't know where you'd start to learn to wait tables at thirty years of age, though!

See, that's the other thing. Interaction with real people (instead of these fake people on the intarwebs) and having to work at being human instead of a programmer. :)
